Fatty Non-alcoholic Liver Disease

"In the study, presented at the International Liver Congress in Berlin, researchers analyzed data from three nationwide U.S. surveys conducted between 1988 and 2008, including responses from 39,500 adults.

The results showed that during the study period, the prevalence of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease doubled from 5.51% to 11%." ( http://www.webmd.com/diet/20110402/non-alcoholic-fatty-liver-disease-rates-rising-in-us )

"Having type-2 diabetes or high cholesterol increases the risk of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease. But by far the biggest problem is obesity. More than one-third of Americans and approximately 12.5 million (17%) of children and adolescents are obese. As it becomes an emerging epidemic, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease is the third most common reason for liver transplants in the U.S. ("http://www.liverfoundation.org/education/liverlowdown/ll1013/bigpicture/)

"Our results extend previous national estimates of the prevalence of NAFLD in the US population and highlight the burden of this disease. Men, Mexican Americans, and people with diabetes and obesity are the most affected groups." (http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/23703888)
